Shea Butter Oil Refinery Plant Process

From Crude Shea Butter to RBD Olein & Stearin. Built for Global Cosmetic, Food & CBE Markets.

Shea Butter Oil Refinery Plant

Engineered to convert crude shea butter into refined, bleached, and deodorized (RBD) shea butter, and further into shea olein and shea stearin for clients across India and global markets.

Super Techno Engineers' Shea Butter Oil Refinery Plant is purpose-built for the shea butter refining process, converting crude shea butter sourced from pressing or solvent extraction into RBD shea butter, and optionally into shea olein and shea stearin through fractionation. Crude shea butter naturally carries gums, free fatty acids, dark pigments, and odour compounds that must be removed before it meets the purity standards demanded by cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and food manufacturers worldwide.

Shea butter refining is more technical than refining most other vegetable fats. Because shea butter is solid at room temperature and carries a naturally high non-hydratable gum content, our shea butter refinery plant is engineered around gentle heat-integrated gum conditioning, careful neutralization, precise bleaching, and controlled deodorization, followed by an optional fractionation stage that splits refined shea butter into shea olein (the liquid fraction, valued in cosmetics) and shea stearin (the solid fraction, the key ingredient in cocoa butter equivalent/CBE manufacturing for chocolate and confectionery). Our shea butter degumming plant, shea butter neutralization plant, and shea butter deodorization plant stages can be configured for either chemical refining shea butter plant or physical refining shea butter plant routes, depending on your crude shea butter's FFA level.

Whether you're looking for a standalone shea butter machine, a shea butter processing plant, or a complete turnkey shea butter refinery with fractionation, Super Techno Engineers builds systems engineered to deliver consistent performance at every scale, backed by reliable shea butter refinery plant manufacturer expertise developed through years of engineering experience. As an established shea butter manufacturer of refining equipment, we also supply standalone units for shea nut oil processors upgrading an existing line.

Shea Butter: From African Crude to Global RBD Product

Crude shea butter, pressed or extracted from the nut of the African shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa), is only half the value chain. Refining is what transforms shea nut oil into the pale, neutral, stable product demanded by cosmetics brands, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and chocolate producers worldwide. Because shea butter is solid at room temperature and naturally carries more non-hydratable gums than most vegetable oils, a shea butter oil refinery plant needs process stages specifically engineered around this fat's unique handling requirements.

A properly designed Shea Butter Oil Refinery Plant does more than purify the butter, it unlocks additional product lines. Once shea butter is refined, our fractionation unit can split it into shea olein, the softer, liquid-at-room-temperature fraction prized in cosmetics and skincare, and shea stearin, the harder, solid fraction used as a cocoa butter equivalent (CBE) in chocolate and confectionery manufacturing.

Chemical Refining vs Physical Refining for Shea Butter

Parameter Chemical Refining Shea Butter Plant Physical Refining Shea Butter Plant
FFA removal method Caustic soda neutralization High-temperature steam distillation during deodorization
Gum conditioning requirement Standard phosphoric acid conditioning Deep conditioning recommended for higher-FFA crude
Byproduct Soap stock Fatty acid distillate
Best suited for Standard-FFA crude shea butter High-FFA crude shea butter

Most Shea Butter Oil Refinery Plant installations use chemical refining for its reliable FFA removal, while a physical refining shea butter plant setup suits crude shea butter with naturally higher FFA levels, avoiding the extra soapstock handling step.

How Our Shea Butter Oil Refinery Plant Works

Every stage of our shea butter refining process is engineered for maximum yield retention, consistent RBD quality, and reliable fractionation output.

1

Gum Conditioning (Degumming)

Crude shea butter from storage tanks is pumped through plate heat exchangers, where it is pre-heated using recovered heat before a final steam-heating stage. A calculated dose of phosphoric acid is dosed into the oil stream in our shea butter degumming plant, conditioning the naturally high non-hydratable gum content into a removable form ahead of neutralization.

2

Neutralization

Conditioned shea butter moves through our shea butter neutralization plant stage, where free fatty acids are removed using caustic soda in chemical refining, or through steam distillation during deodorization where a physical refining shea butter plant setup is used.

3

Bleaching

Neutralized shea butter is dosed with citric acid and mixed with a pre-calculated amount of bleaching earth in an oil-earth mixer as part of our shea butter bleaching process. The slurry is filtered through an alternating set of pressure leaf filters, followed by a second pass through polishing filters, removing the colour pigments responsible for shea butter's natural yellow-brown tone.

4

Deodorization

Bleached shea butter is routed through our shea butter deodorization plant stage, heated under high vacuum while sparging steam strips out remaining free fatty acids and volatile odour compounds. The result is neutral-smelling, stable RBD shea butter plant output suitable for direct use or further fractionation.

5

Fractionation (Optional)

Refined shea butter can be fractionated using controlled crystallization to selectively separate different triglycerides, producing shea olein (the liquid fraction used in cosmetics) and shea stearin (the solid fraction used as a cocoa butter equivalent in chocolate manufacturing).

6

Final Output & Packaging

The process yields RBD shea butter, and where fractionation is included, separately packaged shea olein and shea stearin, each ready for cosmetics, pharmaceutical, food, or CBE manufacturing markets from the same shea butter oil refinery plant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common technical questions our clients ask about the Shea Butter Oil Refinery Plant.

Q1. What is the difference between a Shea Butter Oil Refinery Plant and a Sheanut Solvent Extraction Plant?
expand_more

A solvent extraction plant recovers crude shea butter from shea nuts using hexane, while a Shea Butter Oil Refinery Plant purifies that crude butter into RBD shea butter, and optionally into shea olein and shea stearin, through degumming, neutralization, bleaching, deodorization, and fractionation.

Q2. Should I choose chemical or physical refining for shea butter?
expand_more

It depends on your crude shea butter's FFA level. Chemical refining offers reliable FFA removal for standard crude, while a physical refining shea butter plant setup suits crude with naturally higher FFA content.

Q3. Why does shea butter require gum conditioning instead of standard water degumming?
expand_more

Shea butter naturally carries a higher proportion of non-hydratable gums than most vegetable oils. Continuous phosphoric acid dosing during gum conditioning is required to convert these gums into a removable form before neutralization.

Q4. Is shea stearin from this plant suitable for cocoa butter equivalent (CBE) manufacturing?
expand_more

Yes. Our fractionation system is engineered to produce shea stearin with the melting-point and hardness characteristics required for use as a cocoa butter equivalent in chocolate and confectionery manufacturing.

Q5. What plant capacities are available for shea butter refining?
expand_more

We offer Shea Butter Oil Refinery Plant configurations from 20 TPD for smaller processors up to 500 TPD for large-scale commercial operations.

Q6. What factors affect shea butter refining plant cost?
expand_more

Capacity, whether fractionation is included, refining type (chemical vs physical), and choice between turnkey and equipment-only supply are the biggest cost drivers for any Shea Butter Oil Refinery Plant project.
