Shea Nut Cleaning
Incoming shea nuts from harvest points and traders pass through vibratory or rotary drum cleaners โ removing dust, stems, leaves, and stones before processing begins. Clean raw material means consistent extraction results.
Magnetic Separation
Cleaned shea nuts advance through rotary drum or stationary permanent magnets โ eliminating all iron particles and metal contamination before cracking. Equipment protection starts here.
Cracking
Shea nuts averaging 20โ25mm diameter pass through chilled cast iron roll crackers โ broken into 4 to 8 controlled pieces per nut. Correct cracking size is critical for efficient extraction in any solvent extraction plant for shea nuts.
Cooking / Conditioning
Cracked nut pieces enter a specially designed cooker conditioner โ tempered using jacketed steam and controlled live steam injection. Shea butter solidifies at room temperature, so conditioning at 90ยฐC to 105ยฐC is essential to liquefy the fat and prepare it for pressing. Standard cooker conditioners are not suitable โ SEPL uses purpose-built units for shea nut processing.
Pressing (Pre Press / Full Press)
Pre Press Method
Conditioned shea pieces enter the screw press โ approximately 30% of available oil is expelled, leaving 15โ20% residual oil in the cake. Cake exits at 90โ100ยฐC โ ready for shea cake solvent extraction plant processing.
Full Press Method
The screw press extracts approximately 38% of available oil โ leaving only 7โ8% residual oil in the cake. Suitable for operations targeting maximum mechanical recovery before solvent extraction.
Cake Breaking
Expelled cake pieces are broken into 2โ3 inch segments using roll breakers fitted with breaking knives โ ensuring uniform bed depth and preventing voids in the moving bed extractor. Consistent cake size directly improves shea oil extraction equipment performance.
Cooling
Shea nut expelled cake must be cooled to 55ยฐC before entering the solvent extraction system โ as hexane extraction cannot operate safely above this temperature. Cooled cake is conveyed directly to the sheanut solvent extraction plant.
Solvent Extraction
Pre-pressed or fully pressed shea cake enters the Moving Bed Extractor via sealed feed system. Hexane is sprayed counter-currently over the moving material bed โ dissolving remaining fat to form miscella. Miscella is filtered and transferred to the holding tank. De-oiled material exits through a sealed system to the Desolventizer Toaster โ completing the core shea nut oil extraction plant process.
Meal Conditioning & Bagging
De-oiled shea cake discharged from the DT at 110ยฐC is cooled to 10ยฐC above ambient temperature โ then automatically bagged in 50โ75kg bags. Final de-oiled shea cake specs: moisture 11โ12%, residual oil 1โ1.5%. Used as animal feed ingredient or boiler fuel.
